Veiled in Allegory
It is a story with two levels of meaning: the literal one, which is the surface story, and the symbolic one, which involves a broader, deeper message or concept
I am going to experiment with something a little different.
When I wrote “Just & Regular Accounts” - 7 Finance Lessons from Freemasonry, what I did was look at the Masonic principles and lessons through the lens of finance & money.
What I learned here, is the beauty of allegory. This article lifted the veil of allegory on a multiple of principles and lessons in our ceremonies that can lead us to manage our finances the Masonic way.
An allegory is a narrative or representation in which the characters, settings, or events stand for abstract ideas, principles, or forces, so that the literal happenings carry a secondary, symbolic or metaphorical significance. It is a story with two levels of meaning: the literal one, which is the surface story, and the symbolic one, which involves a broader, deeper message or concept
The beauty of allegory, is that it is not just a secondary lesson, rather you can have multiple lessons by simply applying the allegory to a specific topic.
I write this newsletter from the perspective of self-development. Self-development in general is a quite a broad topic, but there are many areas or sub-topics that encompass it:
Physical health
Mental & Emotional health
Spirituality
Family & Romantic Relationships
Career/Work life
Finance & Money
Social & Friends
Then you can even unpack these event further with further refined topics:
Time management
Mindset
Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem
Leadership
Peak Performance
The list can go on both with the overarching topics of self-development and the and further refinement.
Let’s take the previously covered of “Properly Prepared” as an example.
The overarching lesson behind this was that in order to be ‘properly prepared’ for any task you need to take the time to form an understanding of the tasks & resources required, develop the skills or acquire the knowledge and mentally prepare for what lies ahead.
This lesson can be applied to anything. In the article I gave guide to how to apply it generally across a range of different topics and sub-topics in order to get instruction.
What I would like to experiment with, is taking a single Masonic Principle and breaking it down over a series of newsletters based upon the different self-development topics and sub-topics.
But to do this, I need to know if you this is something that you would like or benefit from?
Can you please let me know in the poll below. It would also be great if you can reply or comment with what are the key areas in your life, or if you want to submit them anonymously you can use this link
