The Progressive Science
In my experience as a Freemason, I've come to see our fraternity as a journey of transformation, but it's often hindered by a common misconception. Many believe that Freemasonry is set in stone, unchangeable due to its Ancient Landmarks. However, this view misses a crucial point: Freemasonry is inherently dynamic.
Starting as a non-Mason, my initiation was more than a ritual; it was the beginning of a profound personal evolution. Each degree I progressed through - the Second and Third - wasn't just a ceremony, but a step in my ongoing growth. It's like moving through the ranks, where each year brings new lessons and opportunities for development.
The irony in Freemasonry, especially for those resisting change, lies in the misunderstanding of its fundamental nature. Consider our guiding metaphor: the building of King Solomon's Temple and our personal temples. It’s all about growth and change. Opposing this concept goes against the essence of Freemasonry.
Our resistance to change stems from a skewed interpretation of the moveable and immovable aspects of Freemasonry. We’ve always been a progressive science, evolving with time. The introduction of the Master Mason degree, the Hiramic Legend, and the Scottish Rite are all testaments to this adaptability.
Originally, Freemasonry was a force for revolutionary thought, sparking significant political changes. Today, however, it often takes a more conservative stance, possibly as a survival strategy against external challenges. Yet, this shift seems to drift from our original principles.
Our practices have continuously evolved. Initially a fraternity exclusive to Christians, has notably evolved over time, opening its doors to various faiths and reflecting societal progress. Our practices have seen significant changes, such using technology to play the various music, and the inclusive step of welcoming members with disabilities. These developments mark a departure from past practices and underscore Freemasonry's commitment to growth and adaptation.
We must acknowledge that while the core values of Freemasonry are unchanging, our processes and activites need to evolve to resonate with new generations. Embracing innovation, while staying true to our fundamental principles and ancient landmarks is crucial for our fraternity's survival and growth.
In essence, the biggest oversight is not recognizing the journey from the rough to the perfect ashlar. This metaphor is a reminder that progress is essential, much like some aspects of Freemasonry are immutable. Like the ashlars, some things are indeed set in stone, but our journey towards improvement and evolution is endless.
